Umtiti,Barcelona defender tests positive for Covid-19

Spanish giants Barcelona have this evening confirmed that Samuel Umtiti has returned a positive test for Covid-19.

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

Quique Setien’s Barca are of course currently gearing up for the club’s biggest outing of the season.

After seeing off Napoli in the Champions League’s round-of-16 last week, the Blaugrana now face an even bigger challenge, in the form of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The Bavarians have been in scintillating form throughout their European campaign to this point, with a 7-1 aggregate drubbing of Chelsea in the competition’s last round having since seen many label Flick’s men as favourites to go on to lift the title.

As such, Barcelona will no doubt have to be at their very, very best if they hold out any hope of tonight’s outing not representing their last of the 2019/20 campaign.

Umtiti concerned

As outlined above, however, whilst the rest of the Blaugrana squad prepare themselves for action, one of the club’s stars has this evening been dealt a concerning piece of news.

The individual in question is Samuel Umtiti.

In a post across the club’s social media platforms a short time ago, Barca confirmed that their French defender has tested positive for Covid-19.

Umtiti, thankfully, is asymptomatic as things stand, and has entered self-isolation in his home.

His positive test will also not have an effect on this evening’s Champions League quarter-final clash, with the former Lyon man currently sidelined with injury, and not part of the Barcelona squad.

‘After the PCR tests carried out on Thursday the first team player Samuel Umtiti has tested positive for Covid-19. The players is asymptomatic, is in good health and is isolating at home.’

‘The Club has informed the relevant sporting and health authorities as well as tracing all the people who have had contact with the player so that they can undergo the corresponding PCR tests.’

Umtiti’s diagnosis comes just 48 hours after another of Barcelona’s defenders, in the form of Jean-Clair Todibo, also returned a positive coronavirus test:
